| By Way of the Intersection involves a curated selection from Artspeak’s library, which includes books and other media accumulated over the institution’s 28-year history, that highlights themes of gender studies, queer theory, critical race theory and science fiction—not necessarily in that order. The selection, presented as a limited colour spectrum, will be arranged in each location so that it is easily available for visitors to browse.As an educator, writer and artist, Randy Lee Cutler investigates the emergence of new cultural forms through an exploration of the intersections of gender, art, science and technology. She has a PhD in Cultural History from the Royal College of Art, UK where she examined the subversion of the sciences in the surrealist enterprise. At present her practice lies the exploration of alternative possibilities for being in and interpreting the world.This exhibition is part of Shelved, a project involving artists who examine various archives and filing systems and produce discursive and experimental library spaces through research, curatorial, and publication projects. Over 6 months, artists Krista Belle Stewart, Randy Lee Cutler, Lucien Durey and Katie Kozak will present rotating displays at the Burnaby Art Gallery, Artspeak, and the Ridington Room at the Music, Art and Architecture Library at The University of British Columbia.
